Taking Atlantic City by storm, John Demko (Bass/Vocal) and Joe Straczynski (Saxophone) have pioneered their own twist on Jamband music- The WORLD’S Heaviest Jamband!

John and Joe went to college together and have traditionally played for personal fulfillment. We cover a roller-coaster of topics in this episode including having realistic goals, the value of music, the insane ground-up promotion process, if musician compensation is fair, and of course, who among them smells the worse!

Here are the highlights of my conversation with John and Joe:

  • Their favorite pieces of equipment and those they simply can’t do without (12:19)
  • Their ultimate long term goals and where they see themselves in the future (18:30)
  • What music means to them and how important this is in each of their lives (21:10)
  • Lessons they learned in the past which resonated with them the most (25:15)
  • Their thoughts about Spotify and other free streaming sites and if musicians are really getting what they deserve (28:30).

Jam on, dudes.

Creative Influences

One hour to create something, with anyone…

  • John: It would be playing a free form jam with Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock.
  • Joe: Getting to play with Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon, Miles Davis, Art Blakey, and Art Tatum.

To defeat Godzilla with their talents…

  • “We will tell George, our guitarist, to do it or outsource it to the other two members of the group. I (John) will supervise for Shawn to do metal blast speeds and Godzilla will not like the altissimo that Joe will be playing.”

World’s Heaviest Advice…

  • Music is awesome because you can watch yourself become better.
  • If you take music away, it will just be an empty existence.
  • At the end of the day, it helps to know somebody no matter how talented you are.
