If networking were a person, it would be John Corcoran. At just 23 years old, John landed a gig as a writer for President Clinton in the White House, and his background wasn’t stacked. He has defined the importance of personal relationships in business and life in general, and he teaches us how to build these relationships to maximize income and clients without marketing or “selling” ourselves.

From a creative standpoint, John started out as a cartoonist and shared the art room with Brandon Boyd, the lead singer of Incubus. He is the founder and creator of the Smart Business Revolution podcast and website – one of the most value packed shows on iTunes.  John has appeared in Forbes, Lifehacker,The Huffington Post, Business Insider, Art of Manliness, Boost Blog Traffic, and Dumb Little Man.

Here are the highlights of my funky conversation with John:

One hour to create something, with anyone…

  • “I would love to relive playing Legos as a kid with my grandparents.”

To defeat Godzilla with his talents…

  • “I would explain to him that he is better as a giver rather than a destroyer as he would achieve more in his life.”

Advice…

  • Writing is a creative expression. There are great and horrible moments but when it’s published and you get feedback, it felts so great. These moments are what carry you through the tough times.
  • First, identify that people who will be most valuable to you and after you have met them, deepen that relationship over time by continuing to provide value to them.
  • You can have everything in life you want if you will just help enough people get what they want. – ZigZiglar
  • If you don’t do follow ups, then you are dooming yourself in the networking hamster wheel for the rest of your life.
  • Go out there and be a giver. Start with something simple like an introduction of two people who might benefit from knowing one another.
