GOODIES AND RESOURCES WORTH FIST PUMPING TO
Yo! Over my years of scaling the interwebs and building an awesome empire, I’ve realized that there are so many crucial pieces that keep my drive and journey in place. This page is somewhat of an index of all the tools, resources, and products that I really believe in and couldn’t do my boogie without. I hope they will guide you in keeping it super funky.
I will continue to update this section as I discover new amazing goodies, so check back often!
Organizing & Productivity
Powerful, easy to use and affordable scheduling software to individuals, service businesses, product businesses and educational institutions. I use this to make it SUPER EASY for guests to schedule in interviews for the podcast! You can customize EVERYTHING and even embed the scheduler into your website. BOOM.
Fancy Hands is a virtual assistant service – perfect for busy people who get caught up in small tasks that someone else could be doing for them! Research, shopping, creating documents… They do it all. This service was introduced to me by the wonderful Jacqueline DuPlessis and has really boosted my productivity. Plus, it’s fun. You can submit random tasks via website, phone, email, or app and these U.S. based assistants get it done FAST. They also keep track of how much time they have saved you. If you use the link below you will get a discount on your first month.
Trello makes it easy to organize anything with anyone. It’s like drag and drop note cards! I use it to organize projects between group members and manage almost anything! Woohoo!
Drop the lengthy email threads, out-of-date spreadsheets, no-longer-so-sticky notes, and clunky software for managing your projects and get Trello, the easy, free, and visual way to organize your important stuff.
IFTTT – PUT THE INTERNET TO WORK FOR YOU
So it stands for ‘If this, then that.’
Seriously, an app like this is undoubtedly the future and extremely powerful in SO many ways. Basically, you can set it to perform a certain function or task when something else is triggered. For example, if you share a picture on instagram with the hashtag #mrshitalot , you can set IFTTT to post that picture to your twitter ONLY when the hashtag #mrshitalot is used. So IF (you post a picture to instagram with the hashtag #mrshitalot) THEN (post the picture to twitter).
It’s not only useable for social media though, the power goes much much much further. For instance, If I take a picture of something I need to buy on amazon and I add it to a certain folder on dropbox, IFTTT will send the picture and an email to my virtual assistant notifying her to order the product for me and have it shipped to my house through amazon prime. So basically, I take a picture of something I need, and the product shows up at my house two days later.
I also set up a recipe to have my VA post to craigslist for me every time I record a voice description of anything I want to post or sell and add the audio file to dropbox. I basically voice record a description about something in my house and within a few minutes it is automatically posted to craigslist for me. Yep.
Check it out. You can follow everyone else’s recipes and add them for yourself.
Succeed at everything!! Unlock your potential and change your life with Lift. Honestly, if it wasn’t for this app, I probably wouldn’t have been able to break my bad habits and create the ones that have kickstarted my new life. Every time I check off a goal for the day and see that running streak, I get an unbelievable sense of accomplishment and a super warm feeling.
The email savior! I can’t say enough about this mail app. It’s a gmail client that allows you to prioritize your emails.
“Mail is stress-free email. We built a mobile app that presorts all of the user’s email into a dashboard. Then – like a personal assistant – it lets the user decide which emails they want to be notified about and when. In doing so, we remove the user from information clutter and unscheduled distractions. Our ultimate goal is to accomplish a shift in the email use paradigm: away from obsessively checking every five minutes, toward relying on the app to let the user know when there is an important message that requires attention, and otherwise being able to prioritize one’s information flow and focus on important work without distractions.”
NAMECHK.COM – CHECK USERNAME AVAILABILITY
Namechk was designed by David Gosse and Andy Edinborough to instantly show you if your desired or branded username was available at the majority of the top social networking websites. By typing your username into the “chk” search box, it will query all the social sites listed on the page and display whether the username is taken or available.
Who knew Mrshitalot is such a popular name?
Are you a list person? This is be far the best to-do list app that I have come across over the last few years of searching, and it’s FREE! I use it to keep up with my tasks, set priorities, make grocery lists, brainstorm ideas & more. You can also share your lists with others and review tasks you’ve already completed. Simple and superior.
TEXT EXPANDER – SAVE MASSIVE TIME TYPING
TextExpander saves your fingers and your keyboard, expanding custom keyboard shortcuts into frequently-used text and pictures. SO, if you have email templates, links, quotes or even hashtags that you use frequently, you can set them in text expander and only type shortcuts such as ‘;quote’ and it will automatically type out the quote for you. A little hint.. it seems to allow you to use demo mode FOREVER. I’ve been running it for about 7 months now and it still works. It also tracks how many hours of typing it has saved you, and I think I’m up to like 7 or 8 hours. Pretty awesome.
I use it quite a bit for repetitive emails, addresses, signatures, links, and hashtags.
CANVA – CREATE ASTONISHING GRAPHICS, EASY
I really can’t believe this tool is free. Even if you have zero skill to create graphic images, Canva allows you to create designs for web or print: blog graphics, presentations, Facebook covers, flyers, posters, invitations and so much more with a super easy to use drag and drop platform.
I use Canva for all my quote images for the podcast, as well as podcast covers, blow images and all social media images.
Buffer helps you manage multiple social media accounts at once. Quickly schedule content from anywhere on the web, collaborate with team members, and analyze rich statistics on how your posts perform. It’s pretty nifty. The only downside I’ve noticed is impressions vs. posting straight to a social media site. It seems that posts that are made through buffer or other like services don’t get as much interaction. Still, it’s an amazingly nifty tool.
Evernote Evernote makes it easy to remember things big and small from your everyday life using your computer, phone, tablet and the web.
Key features of Evernote:
- Create text, photo and audio notes
- Clip web pages including text, links, and images
- Synchronize your notes across your devices
- Search for text within snapshots and images
COGGLE.IT – BRAINSTORM YOUR HEART OUT
Are you a brain-map kinda person? Well, this is even more effective and FAST than the ultra effective pen and paper method. Don’t get me wrong, I still scribble out brain maps on paper, but Coggle.it takes it to the next level. In the cloud, color coded and blazing fast to use, I highly recommend screwing around a little in the gem. You never know what kind of genius might come of it.
SCREENFLOW – CREATE VIDEO TUTORIALS & COURSES
Has a price, but there is nothing better when it comes to recording your screen for tutorials or courses. So clean. So fast. So sexy.
Bananatag’s email tracking provides you with data on what happens to emails that you send. It’s similar to a “this message has been read” receipt except that it’s sent automatically, meaning that the recipient doesn’t need to manually send the notification. Email tracking can tell you if your recipient opened your message and if they clicked any links in the email body. This is super helpful when testing interaction with different email formats.
I use dropbox for quick file shares between peers, clients, and friends. You get up to 2 gb storage for free. Put your stuff in Dropbox and get to it from your computers, phones, or tablets. Edit docs, automatically add photos, and show off videos from anywhere. Share photos with friends. Work with your team like you’re using a single computer. Everything’s automatically private, so you control who sees what.
If you aren’t using this- you are doing things WAY wrong. Not only can you back up your files from your computer, but the drive implements with the entire google platform. I use it for managing shared folders and files and for online document and spreadsheet management and editing. It comes in super handy when sharing projects with virtual assistants. They allow up to 16gb for free, and it acts like a normal drive on your computer when installed.
Rapportive is a sweet little Gmail plugin which shows you everything about your contacts right inside your inbox. If I’m on an email chain with someone and not connected to them via social media, it shows me and allows me to connect through one-click buttons. It also displays your contact’s linked-in profiles. Check it out!
Eliminate your internet distractions!! This service actually tracks where you spend your time on the computer and submits daily reports for your review. The premium version even allows you to block websites and programs that are distracting for certain amounts of time to help increase productivity.
FIVERR – PURCHASE 1000’S OF SERVICES FOR $5
If you haven’t already heard of or taken advantage of Fiverr, you are missing out. It’s a huge service marketplace of people willing to do thousands of different tasks for $5.00 each. I use it for copy editing, transcriptions, graphics and more! I actually used it to have my last ebook “50+ Secrets & Tips From The World’s Top Creative Entrepreneurs” designed which came out AWESOME.
SANEBOX – NO MORE CRYING BECAUSE OF EMAIL
This is a sweet gmail client, and just as it sounds, it makes your inbox sane.sane. If your email has a tendency to go apeshit like mine, this handy little tool is totally worth the $24/year that it costs. They also give you a pretty lengthy free trial…and if you hold out form buying, they give you another. 🙂
It basically will auto filter all of your not-so-important emails into a separate label, allowing you to feel sane again. For me, it made it so much easier to filter through what I really needed to read and what I needed to ignore for a few days longer. Priorities FO SHO.
JUST UNFOLLOW – COPY FOLLOWERS BY KEYWORD
Conventionally, this is a sort of grey-hat tool that allows you to remove people you are following on twitter who aren’t following you back, but I’ve discovered something truly awesome about the program.
It’s an incredible way to meet and network with people via twitter.
Just Unfollow allows you to copy followers of people who have similar audiences as you, and it also allows keyword following. So, if I want to find people tweeting about creativity and follow them, it’s super easy. It also has an automation tool that allows you to send them messages when they follow you. I am sort of not he fence about the auto-messages, but I will say it has led to many great friendships and connections through twitter that I would have otherwise never found.
Don’t be annoying and abuse it, but definitely give it a try. It could lead to fist pumping, best friends or even spouses. I’m laughing inside.
5 Minute Journal
A big part of my drive revolves around goal setting and visualizing where I want to be. This journal app is the perfect management tool for just that! Every morning it pops up a reminder and asks what 3 things I am grateful for. Then, you enter 3 things that would make today amazing and write a little about your affirmations. In the evening, you review the progress and log 3 amazing things that happened during the day. It bundles all of that up and puts it into a nice calendar for easy review!
“It’s been proven over and over again that shifting your focus to the positive can dramatically improve your happiness. The key is consistency. This journal has been created by combining the proven elements of positive psychology that can make all of the difference in your life. You will find The Five Minute Journal to be a great way to start and end the day.”
Piezo makes it a snap to record audio on your Mac. With just a few clicks, you can record audio from almost any application, or from audio input devices like microphones. I use Piezo as my prime recording software for my podcasts. It works perfectly with Skype and Google Hangouts and saves the conversations as an Mp3.
Ecamm Call Recorder
Ecamm is another audio recording option that I use to back up my Piezo incase something goes wrong. It works with Skype and automatically records any call that you make. You can also convert calls into mp3 and split multiple tracks after the recording.
CLOUDFLARE – SPEED UP YOUR ONLINE DIGS
Cloudflare is really a server-side cache tool or CDN that will accelerate your website. Using the wordpress plugins will sometimes contribute to your site being slightly sluggish, so I’m more a fan of the server cache. There are so many hosts that have partnerships with cloud flare, including hostgator.
It’s pretty simple to set up and definitely worth the time.
LATERGRAMME – BE THE BOSS OF INSTAGRAM
A sweet and free tool to schedule and manage your instagram posts. You can upload all your images and drag them to your calendar for when you want them to release.
SNIP.LY – ATTACH MESSAGES TO SHARED LINKS
I just found this a few weeks ago, and it’s a great way to drive traffic to your site or social media accounts. Everytime you share a link, you can attach a message and call-to-action button on the share. Groovy.
“Record, edit, and create audio content with Adobe Audition’s comprehensive toolset, including waveform, spectral display, and multitrack. This powerful sound editing program is designed to accelerate audio and video production workflows and deliver the highest standards for audio quality.”
Podcast/Audio auto-editing and production. Auphonic has saved me more time than any other program when it comes to the podcasting process. You can bulk upload audio clips to process, tag, and distribute! Once I get done making cuts on an audio clip or podcast show, I use Auphonic to automatically edit the sound quality, attach appropriate meta data, and send to my hosting platforms such as libsyn, soundcloud, youtube, and google drive. It allowed me to eliminate around 5 steps in my process, clearing up so much time for more important things!
Libsyn is a podcast hosting service and publishing platform for managing, distributing and monetizing your content. Fully integrated tools provide a one-stop solution with flexible service level options. There is nothing better for hosting your podcast files. It’s never a good idea to host the files on your own website server because it will bog down the speed of your site.
“The company that expertly connects advertisers with premium online shows and podcasts. Since 2005, Podtrac has specialized in developing successful podcast advertising programs for some of the most innovative and largest brands, leveraging our comprehensive infrastructure for measurement and demographics for online show audiences. Podtrac looks forward to working with you to engage your advertising targets or grow your online show.”
SoundCloud is an online audio distribution platform based in Berlin, Germany that enables its users to upload, record, promote and share their originally-created sounds. In July 2013, it had 40 million registered users and 200 million listeners.
ID3 Tag Editor is a free audio file data tagging ID3 format editor, support ID3 tag version include: ID3v1 and ID3v2, this audio tool can read and write metadata tags for MP3, FLAC, Ogg-Vorbis, Monkey’s Audio, Musepack, and Shorten audio files with full Unicode support, this software is freeware and completely free, it is free personal, commercial, and non-profit use.
Allows any type of conversations (Text, Voice, Video) on any devices (Computers, Androids, and iOS devices). I use this for some podcast interviews, mastermind groups, webinars, group discussions and more.
Website & App Tools
WordPress is web software anyone can use to create a beautiful website or blog. It is the most powerful content management system on the internet and by far the most user friendly. The possibilities are endless, and I run all of my websites off wordpress. There is also a giant community of plugins that allow you to accomplish almost any website task needed, easily.
HostGator is my #1 choice for shared web-hosting. I’ve used several hosts including BounceWeb, BlueHost, GoDaddy and more, but HostGator is the most user friendly and the support is unreal. Plus, prices are always low and there is usually some sort of deal they are running. If you plan on signing up for a website host, shoot me an email and I can probably get you a 20-30% discount at HostGator.
AppSumo / SumoMe
“Xcode 6 introduces a radically new way to design and build software. Swift is an innovative new programming language for Cocoa and Cocoa Touch and, when combined with Xcode tools, makes programming a delightfully live experience. This same live experience permeates throughout Xcode 6. Live rendering within Interface Builder displays your hand-written UI code within the design canvas, instantly reflecting changes you type in code. And the new view debugger explodes all the UI layers into a 3D visualization, making it easy to understand how your interface is composed, and identify overlapping or clipping views.”
Turn sketches, wireframes, PSDs and designs into interactive mobile and web prototypes in just a few clicks. All synced in real-time from Dropbox. Seriously, taking a few graphic mock ups and adding hot-spots with Marvel is almost as exciting as releasing the app itself. It allows a real time depiction of how the app will actually work. Love it.
Another amazing tool for turning app ideas into reality. PopApp lets you take hand drawn sketches and bring them to life. You simply take pictures of your layouts with your phone and upload them, then add hotspots for functionality. OH YEA.
VIRAL TAG – SCHEDULE SOCIAL MEDIA IMAGES
This is sorta pricy, but it’s definitely worth losing the pants. Save time & drive traffic by publishing your visual content to multiple social networks with a single click.
I use this to auto past images to pinterest boards, and I’ve stacked over 100,000 image impressions/month from it. Spring break. Show me your tits.
Products & Services I LOVE
OpportuniTEAS – ClearTea and Brainiac
WINNER WINNER!! I interviewed the creator of these Teas, Greg Bastin, on episode 14 of The Artrepreneur Now. From the first taste, I was hooked for life. Seriously, if you are a tea fan or even just looking to improve your daily energy levels and health.. you have to try this stuff. I drink the Brainiac every morning with a scoop of Chia Seeds and a scoop of ClearTea after lunch to get my energy back up and in boogie mode.
MOMONDO – BECOME A WORLD CHAMPION
My favorite site to search and book flights. You can arrange by price with bar graphs on each day, and also search through via calendar layout. This site is on of the rare that will actually pull some budget airlines into the picture. I just found a roundtrip from Chicago to Thailand for $1k.
FINDASPRING.COM – REFRESH YOUR WATER SUPPLY
The typical city tap water has over 200 different pharmaceutical chemicals in it. Yuck.
So, watch this:
Then, go to the website link about and find the nearest spring near you, or get an RO system or visit your nearest whole foods store.
If you want to check out one of my favorite podcasts, and an incredible episode all about water, visit episode 73 on Shawn Stevenson’s site.
JEENA CHO MEDITATIONS – TAKE CARE OF YOUR MIND
I’m sure you all remember Jeena from episode 48 of the podcast. Well, she’s a champion, and I’m absolutely in love with her guided meditations. If you haven’t tried meditation, I understand. I was there once too, and you can read about that here.
Long story short, I listen to her meditations every morning, and I highly recommend. There is nothing better than paying attention to yourself. You will be surprised how much it reduces stress and anxiety. Do it yo.
You can a discount of $20 off by using the code JEENA20 because SHE LOVES YOU. I love you too. You love you. Giggity Giggity.
The ARTristic Easel – The Easel to End All Easels!
Alright, so I’m not sure why this hasn’t been created before- but Tony Barber has it all figured out. I’m curious if any of you artists have used one of these before?? You can literally solve all the canvas problems with this thing: paint all the edges, rotate in any direction, set heights & angles, no dripping/sticking/running, … I mean ANYTHING. Think about how much this tool can accelerate and enhance the creation process.
